Advice from a Designer

Advice from a Designer

When it comes to planning your perfect renovation, the advice from an expert can be an invaluable tool to help you find the right materials, ensure everything is up to code and create a seamless look that you’ll love long after the project is completed.

At Classic Remodeling, we believe in transparency and using our over three decades of industry knowledge to help homeowners create their dream house. A core part of our process is collaborating with the clients, listening to their needs and wants, and bringing together a final product that turns hopes and dreams into reality.

While our craftsmen are an excellent resource for information about the construction side of the project, our in-house designers are an incredible resource, too, especially in the early stages of planning. Our design consultant, Gianna Sweet, who has been in the design industry since 2005, shares some advice for homeowners who are about to take the plunge into remodeling.

What is your design philosophy?

Great design is pleasing. Not only do I want your home to look good, I want it to work for you. I like to talk with you and walk through your daily life to know how my design can best accommodate your lifestyle, pleasing to the eye and pleasing to your life.

What is your process for designing a remodeling project?

I like to first get the homeowner’s wish list, see all the things they would ideally have in their home, so I have a good starting point of what they are looking for. Then I like to learn about their aesthetic. Sometimes I ask for inspiration images so I can get a better feel for their look, or sometimes I pull ideas based on their wishlist and see what they do and do not like within those pictures to help us narrow it down. It is also important to know what the rest of your home looks like to see if there are any details that we need/want to incorporate in your remodel.

What do you recommend for a client who has high-end taste but wants to be mindful of their budget?

Sometimes you just need to pick and choose what is most important to the design and your lifestyle. There are certain things that are worth the extra money and some that are not, and I will be here to guide you through those choices. But there are a lot of alternatives out there. We will hunt down cheaper “dupes” that look like your original selection to save you money wherever we can.

Which is better? Timeless or bold?

Timeless. Don’t get me wrong, I love a bold moment, but if you are concerned with resale value or if your choice may just be a trend, it isn’t always the best choice long term. If it is in your budget, go bold! But timeless makes more sense long term, and timeless is always beautiful and classy.

Where are clients able to browse through materials for their project?

We pride ourselves on our showroom located upstairs in our office. We have a wide selection of cabinetry, countertops, tile, hardware, and faucets. If you aren’t completely happy with anything you see upstairs or if your scope needs more than just what we have to offer, we typically set up appointments at vendors around town and go with you to help select additional fixtures and finishes. We have long-standing relationships with appliance stores, stone suppliers, and fireplace vendors.

What’s one current design trend you absolutely love?

Modern Farmhouse is a classic. I love the cozy and sleek designs you can create. I have been loving checkerboard tile. I have also been seeing Wabi Sabi design pop up, and obsessed is an understatement. I love how it looks edgy yet so calm and minimal at the same time.

How do you handle unexpected challenges or changes during a project?

Roll with the punches. Changes are expected. We are prepared for challenges. Remodeling has a lot of that. Our team has been doing this for a long time, so we all come together to brainstorm solutions to any problems, and if we still can’t find an appropriate solution, we extend out to industry professionals who may be able to offer more insight. If a problem arises, do not worry, we will take care of it until we find a compromise we are both happy with.

How often do you communicate with the client during the project?

As often as I can. As soon as I get updates, I contact the homeowner. Communication is key to ensure a smooth remodel. Before we start the construction on your home, we like to have multiple meetings to ensure you’re confident in your design. Then, during the process, we like to check in at least once a week to give you progress updates on your home. I am always readily available to answer any questions or address any concerns.

How do you incorporate client feedback into your designs?

Easy. If it is a design preference, we can always make a change. I work for you and with you. This is your home after all, and it’s most important that you are happy with your home. If I don’t think something will work, I will show them why it won’t work and explain whether it’s from a cost standpoint or a construction standpoint.

Who handles all the necessary permits and inspections?

Ben Dammeyer, our draftsman, does all the permitting to make sure the project can move forward and tackles any problems that arise within the permitting process. He also coordinates with HOA, ARB, etc, to get approvals for every project.

The project managers coordinate all the inspections. They are always out in the field and in touch with the project craftsman on your job to make sure that inspections are scheduled and then continue to work to make sure every aspect passes inspection.

Do you have any additional advice for client prepping for a remodeling project?

Know what you’re getting yourself into. Be prepared for changes and challenges. They don’t always arise, but when they do, you need to be prepared to roll with the punches and trust that we will do everything we can to make you happy in the end.

Our design team is here to help you find materials and make design choices that you’ll love for years to come. Whether you have the exact vision in mind or you need a little coaxing along, leaning on their design expertise can make the process smooth and stress-free.
