Update a long, narrow 175-year old kitchen to make this historic home, chosen as the Charleston Symphony Designer House, more suitable for entertaining large gatherings while retaining its character. Provide a pleasing transition between the elegant main house and a rustic sitting room with brick hearth and hand-hewn beams and floor.

Since the budget precluded expansion beyond existing walls, a slender central island with stovetop and prep area was built to allow spacious passage. A second sink and dishwasher were added to facilitate serving larger groups, while a built-in washer and dryer were hidden below the expanded counter space. To maximize natural light without losing storage, glass cabinets were integrated with an exterior window overlooking the courtyard. Colors and textures such as Kahvali slate floors and granite countertops complement adjoining rooms. Voted 'Best Room in the House' by event visitors.
